His current case? The Mystery of the Missing Squeaky Toy. Bella, his human, was in a state of utter despair. Her beloved rubber chicken, Clucky, had vanished.
“Don’t worry, Bella,” Barty declared, puffing out his chest (which, admittedly, wasn’t saying much). “Snugglesworth’s on the case! I shall leave no cushion unturned, no discarded slipper unexamined.” He’d seen that in a movie once.
His investigation began with the usual suspects: the couch. Barty dove headfirst into the cushions, emerging with a mouthful of dust bunnies and a forgotten dog biscuit. “Aha! Evidence!” he barked, proudly presenting the biscuit to Bella.
Bella sighed. “Barty, that’s your biscuit. You buried it there last week.”
Undeterred, Barty continued his meticulous search. He sniffed the rug, pausing dramatically at a particularly intriguing patch. “Intriguing! This rug… it smells faintly of… laundry detergent! And… and… despair!” He looked accusingly at Bella. “Did you launder Clucky under duress, Bella? Is this a cover-up?”
Bella rolled her eyes. “It just smells like laundry detergent because I spilled some. And I’m despairing because Clucky is gone!”
Next, he interrogated the cat, Mittens, who was lounging on the windowsill, seemingly unconcerned.

Mittens yawned, displaying a set of truly impressive fangs. “Sleeping. Unlike you, Detective Nosey, I don’t need to make a grand performance out of everything.” She flicked her tail dismissively. “Perhaps the chicken flew the coop. Literally.”
Barty bristled. The audacity! Was she mocking his methods? He glared at Mittens, then, with a sudden flash of inspiration, he leapt onto the windowsill, nearly knocking Mittens into the flowerpots.
“Aha! I’ve found it!” Barty barked triumphantly.
Bella rushed over, her face lighting up. “You found Clucky?”
Barty, nose pressed against the glass, pointed with his paw. “Look! A pigeon! A feathered foe! Clearly, it is the prime suspect in the disappearance of Clucky! Perhaps it snatched it, thinking it was a rival?”
Bella stared at him, then at the pigeon, then back at Barty. “Barty, the pigeon is just sitting on a branch.”
Deflated, Barty slumped back onto the floor. Had he truly run out of leads? Could it be that this case was too complex for even the great Bartholomew Snugglesworth?
Then, a thought struck him. He hadn’t checked the obvious.
With renewed determination, he trotted over to Bella and began sniffing her pockets. He nudged her hand with his nose, whining softly.
“Barty, what are you doing?” Bella asked, patting his head.
He whined louder, pawing at her leg. Finally, Bella reached into her pocket and pulled out… Clucky!
“Oh, silly me!” she exclaimed. “I took Clucky to the store with me this morning. I completely forgot.”
Barty wagged his tail furiously, basking in the glory of solved mystery. He had done it! He, Bartholomew Snugglesworth, had cracked the case!
He barked proudly, puffing out his chest once more. “Elementary, my dear Bella! Elementary!”
Mittens, still perched on the windowsill, rolled her eyes again. “More like accidental, Detective Dumbbell.”
